Q: Do I need to own a drum kit to learn how to play drums?

A: No! At Mill Hill Music Complex, we supply the kit for lessons and we also have a fully equipped drum practice studio where you can practice for only £4 per hour! You only have to bring your sticks! Of course if you decide that drumming is for you, we are Pearl drums main dealers and can supply kits at great prices. We also have a good stock of second hand kits.  Of course when you start doing gigs you will need a kit, although we also hire drum kits!

Q: Are drums the easiest instrument to play?

A: It all depends on whether you have a good sense of rhythm. To become a virtuoso drummer takes a huge amount of practice and dedication, but most people can quickly get to a level where they can play a basic beat to most well known popular songs. Drums are probably the most fun instrument to play!

Q: Are drums noisy?

A: Yes!!!! That is what makes them such fun! If you live in a mansion, or have deaf neighbours this shouldn’t be a problem. If this is a problem, you can always book a rehearsal room for practice.

Q: How old do I have to be to learn drums?

A: We’ve had people as young as 3/4 years old learning, although we insist that an adult accompanies young people. There is no upper age limit, we’ve had 80 year olds (they don’t need to bring their mum!).

Drum Lessons with Sam White

Drum lessons are amazing fun and you can start learning at almost any age.

Sam Drum

Sam has been playing since 1998, and is a regular performer on many stages throughout the country. Sam studied at Drumtech under Paul Elliot, Richard Beasley, Tom Meadows and Justin Scott, earning himself a bachelor’s degree in music. Sam currently plays in six different bands, touring all around the UK and Europe, giving him a wealth of live performing experience. The highlights of Sam’s career range from playing in front of 50,000 people at Umbria rock festival 2014 in Italy, meeting Jimi Hendrix’s producer Eddie Kramer, and his band appearing in the 2015 Catherine Hardwicke film ‘Miss You Already’ starring Drew Barrymore, Dominic Cooper and Toni Collette

Sam has been teaching drums since 2002, is proficient in many styles and has experience teaching everyone from absolute beginners to the more advanced player.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

I am patient, encouraging and enthusiastic about helping my students become the very best they can be, all in a relaxed and fun learning environment. I am able not only to teach ‘how’, but also ‘why’, creating an in depth understanding of the ergonomics behind the techniques and application of the concepts that we will learn. You will learn not only how to play, but also how to create your own patterns and fills, helping you to find your own path as a drummer, and enjoying every minute of it.

I TEACH:

  • Rockschool and Trinity Guildhall grades 1-8,
  • Drum notation and rhythm theory,
  • Technique and technical concept application,
  • Tips on dealing with exam stress, time management and performance anxiety,
  • Care and maintenance of equipment.

Sam’s Top TIP
Regularly film yourself playing. Often, improvement can be so minute, that it can be easy to become disheartened, feeling like we are going nowhere. However, this is not the case and having a visual record of your progress can really help to show you that the practice is working, and offer vital encouragement at times when you need it most. Celebrate every little success, and enjoy the journey.

Sam has great passion for the drums and drumming, is reliable and does his best to get you to give a great performance.

Lesson prices with Sam are: £21.50 for thirty minutes, £32.25 for 45 minutes,  £43 for an hour
